Remeo and Suomen Pakkaustuottajat Oy (SPT) are expanding their collaboration with a new agreement focused on the sorting and recycling of consumer plastic packaging. Remeo is investing in recycling technology that will significantly increase domestic processing capacity. This investment enables high-quality recycling of SPT customers’ packaging in Finland and achieves higher recycling rates than before.

Investments in recycling technology for plastic packaging waste will be completed at Remeo’s Vantaa recycling facility during the second quarter of 2025. At that time, large-scale plastic waste processing, as per the agreement, will commence. Following its strategic plan, SPT aims to centralize a significant portion of consumer plastic packaging sorting and recycling domestically. Previously, Finland lacked sufficient industrial capacity for processing household plastic packaging at a high-quality level.

We are delighted to strengthen our partnership with Suomen Pakkaustuottajat. The collaboration that began last autumn has been incredibly insightful, as we’ve collected substantially data over the past year on the composition of packaging waste. This data, combined with our expertise in sorting, served as the foundation for the next phase of investments in our recycling facility, which was opened in 2021, enabling high-quality plastic sorting,” says Panu Routasalo, CEO of Remeo.

SPT and Remeo have a proven track record of successful development, and we’re excited to take the next step in our collaboration. SPT’s long-term strategy focuses on serving our customers’ interests, and Remeo’s bold investment in a plastic sorting facility in Finland perfectly supports this. The plant’s capacity and capabilities have been tailored to meet our operational needs, as the volume of plastic packaging under SPT’s responsibility has grown significantly. Furthermore, we can ensure that recycled plastic returns as raw material for our customers’ use,” says Pekka Tommola, CEO of Suomen Pakkaustuottajat Oy.

Remeo’s plastic processing capacity addresses Finland’s recycling gap

Remeo is set to expand its plastic recycling operations in 2025. Once the current investments are completed, the Vantaa recycling facility will boast a processing capacity of 100,000 tons for plastic packaging—nearly five times the current capacity available in Finland.
